PicoSure

PicoSure Review

PLEASE NOTE: Advanced Dermatology does not provide tattoo removal treatments. This article is for education and information purposes only.

PicoSure is a tattoo removal laser treatment that is quick and effective. This FDA approved treatment successfully removes difficult ink colours, such as blue and green, faster than any other method. Pulses are created that target the ink in the skin and shatters it. These pulses last one trillionth of a second and are 100 times faster than a nanosecond laser. The shattered ink will then be able to be eliminated by the body. Tattoos of a wide variety and ink colours can be removed using this technology, with black, red, and dark blue colours being the easiest to remove. Picosure can also remove portions of tattoos, as this treatment can precisely target very small areas of skin without effecting surrounding skin.

What areas can PicoSure treat? How many treatments will an individual need?

PicoSure can be used to treat the chest, the face, the decollete, hands, legs and other body parts. Each individual will need a different number of treatments, as this will be based off how big the tattoo is, what colours were used for the tattoo, how deep the ink is, and if any previous treatments have been done before. Generally speaking, for most individuals, this will be about 3 to 6 treatments. Some individuals will be able to see a difference in just after one treatment, however, for others, it may take a few treatments to notice any difference. It will generally take about 6 weeks for the body to begin breaking down the tattoo ink. The treatments should not be done sooner than 6 weeks, as even though the treated skin looks healed, it is not, and this will not make the tattoo be removed any sooner. In fact it could make the skin scar if treated sooner than 6 weeks.

Treatments are done in a quick fashion. For small tattoos, a single treatment takes about 10 to 15 minutes, medium sized tattoos will take about 15 to 25 minutes, and large tattoos will take 25 to 35 minutes.

Does PicoSure hurt? Will there be limitations after having the procedure done?

PicoSure treatments do not have much pain associated with them. Often times the tattoo is numbed or chilled with cold air. The pain felt is often comparable to the snapping of a rubber band. Others have compared it to getting a tattoo. Most will tolerate the pain quite well. Each session generally lasts about 15 minutes, but may be longer depending on how big the tattoo is.

An individual should limit any physical activity 24 to 48 hours after having a PicoSure treatment. Sun exposure should also be avoided during the treatments until the skin is completely healed.

What will the area treated look like after a treatment session of PicoSure?

After a treatment of PicoSure, the skin may appear to be red and swollen. There is also the possibility of some bleeding of the skin. Some will even experience small blisters on the skin. Typically the skin will stay red and swollen for only a few hours but could last for a few days. The skin will feel like it has a mild sunburn. Should scabs form on the area, it is important to not pick at them. If blisters do pop on their own, it is suggested that the skin be covered after applying a healing ointment to help protect against infections and scarring. Rarely is there any damage done to the skin using PicoSure.

What are the benefits to using PicorSure for tattoo removal? Are there any disadvantages?

Typically, using PicoSure to remove tattoos does not leave any scars. One of the disadvantages and a very rare occurrence is that some individuals may develop keloids, which are abnormal scars.

Retin A Cream

What is Retin A Cream?

Retin A Cream is a skin cream that is used to treat acne, wrinkles, and fine lines. Retin A Cream can help individuals clean out the pores and smooth out facial skin that is rough. This cream, which was approved by the FDA in the 1960s, is only available by the prescription of a doctor.

Retin A Cream exfoliates the skin, removing the trapped dead skin cells, which will stimulate the growth of new skin cells. When dead skin cells are removed, it is harder for acne to form. The pores will be unclogged by drying up excess oil that is forming on the skin.

Fine lines and wrinkles can be reduced when Retin A Cream is used as the cream will help new collagen to form. Applications of Retin A Cream will also help cell turnover speed up, which will not only smooth out the skin but also help with any discolouration of the skin.

What are the benefits of using Retin A Cream?

Using Retin A Cream can have many benefits. While it was originally prescribed by skin specialists for controlling acne, it was quickly discovered that patients using Retin A Cream had softer skin that appeared to look and feel smoother. The complexion also looked brighter and the skin looked younger. When used on a regular basis, Retin A Cream may also ward off certain types of skin cancer.

Retin A Cream has been used successfully by many individuals to help diminish the appearance of freckles, sunspots, and age spots.

Retin A Cream is often used by individuals when they are preparing to have laser resurfacing or facial surgeries. It may also be used after procedures to speed up the recovery time.

What are the side effects of Retin A Cream?

Retin A Cream can make the skin very sensitive to the sun. This will make the skin more likely to get sunburned. Always make sure that a high quality sun screen is applied to the skin before heading outdoors. Excessive drying of the skin may also occur when using Retin A Cream, which can cause peeling of the skin. It is important to note that since excessive drying may take place, Retin A Cream should only be used around the eyes and the mouth once every third night. The skin may also have excessive redness to it.

Excessive cold weather may make the skin irritated when using Retin A Cream. After applying Retin A Cream, an individual might notice a warm feeling where the cream was applied.

Rare side effects of using Retin A Cream include severe allergic reactions. These reactions may include tightness in chest, difficulty breathing, itching, rash, hives, severe redness, swelling of the mouth, lips or tongue, crusting and blistering of the skin. If any of these rare side effects are seen, an individual will want to get medical attention as soon as possible.

For the first two or three weeks of using Retin A Cream, the skin condition will often look worse compared to when first starting the cream. This is normal and the individual should continue using the cream.

Who is Retin A Cream suitable for?

Retin A Cream can be used by individuals that face struggles with acne, fine lines and wrinkles and ageing skin. It should not be used by pregnant woman as Retin A Cream may not be safe for the unborn baby. Those that are breast feeding should also avoid using Retin A Cream. An individual that is allergic to any ingredient in Retin A Cream should also refrain from using the product. Individuals that have sunburned skin should not use the cream until after the sunburn has fully healed.

Hyaluronic Acid Serum

Hyaluronic acid serum can greatly benefit the skin. Hyaluronic acid (HA) can be derived from many sources, and is all natural. Hyaluronic acid is also found naturally in the body. Babies are born with very high levels of hyaluronic acid in their bodies. Unfortunately, by the time the skin is 40 years old, the hyaluronic acid will have decreased. However, there are some products that can be used to help increase the hyaluronic acid in the skin. Hyaluronic acid can be found in many products today, from skincare lines (most often found in creams and serums, but could possibly be found in skin cleansers). Many find that using a high quality hyaluronic acid serum will draw moisture to the skin.

What are the benefits of using a hyaluronic acid serum?

There are many wonderful benefits to using a hyaluronic acid serum. While the word acid may scare off many, a hyaluronic acid serum is actually quite gentle to the skin. Those that have ageing skin will find that a hyaluronic acid serum can help bring moisture into the skin. We’re not sure if this has been sciencetifically tested, but there’s a saying that 1000 ml of water will be drawn into the skin just using just a gram of hyaluronic acid. This acid will keep the skin plump and well hydrated. Hyaluronic acid serum will also keep the skin looking and feeling young. It will help to smooth out the skin, making it softer.

Hyaluronic acid serums can also improve the elasticity of the skin, and will help to reverse the free radical damage that has been done to the skin. Hyaluronic acid serums will penetrate deep into the skin, reversing any damage that has been done to the skin from not only the sun, but from pollution as well. It can be used for every skin type, even oily skin. Hyaluronic acid serums can be applied alone if the skin is too oily, or if the skin is dry, a moisturiser can be applied over the top. Hyaluronic acid serum has even been known to prevent excessive oil buildup on the skin.

What to look out for when choosing a hyaluronic acid serum product?

When an individual is looking for a hyaluronic acid serum, they should look at the ingredients of the skincare line. It is often preferred that the skincare lineup be paraben free, and do not contain alcohol, which could further damage the skin.

Hyaluronic acid serums are considered to be very safe and effective. There are very rarely side effects that are seen when using hyaluronic acid serums.

There are many hyaluronic acid serums on the market. They are a hot trend currently in the beauty world. The Advanced Dermatology Anti-Ageing regimen works synergistically to provide the best results possible. The skin care lineup features at least 12 powerful ingredients that work together to target the skin that is ageing. The anti-ageing skin care line consists of a hyaluronic acid that is far superior to other brands that use cheaper versions of hyaluronic acid serums. Step number 2, the super youth serum, is a hyaluronic acid serum. This serum is super hydrating, yet lightweight. The serum will aid in plumping up the skin while repairing and firming it up. It has a free radical fighter that will awaken the skin to help prevent any future damage. This hyaluronic acid serum will work continuously after being applied to deliver skin that is flawless, radiant and glowing.

How should a hyaluronic acid serum be applied to the skin?

The most potent type of hyaluronic acid can be found in a serum. Hyaluronic acid serum should always be applied to skin that is clean and free of anything. The skin should be damp to see the best results. This will ensure that water will be trapped and locked into the skin.

Snail Cream

Snail Cream: Benefits, Treatments and Side Effects

Snail cream is a cream that is made from snail extracts. Snails are very well known for their healing properties. Many do not realise that snails never have skin infections or inflammations. European cosmetic companies have marketed snail cream for many years. Ancient Greeks have been known to use the cream years ago. Hippocrates, who was one of the first to advocate that snails are excellent in skin care, documented that crushed snails and milk mixed together was used in 400 BC for redness of the skin. It can leave the skin looking and feeling younger and keep the skin in tip top shape. Using snail extract was found by accident Greeks when those handling snails on snail farms noticed that the hands healed quickly when injured, with no scars.

Part of what makes snail cream so amazing is that there are so many skin elements that are shared by people and snails. The matrix of the skin in humans is almost equal to that of a snail.

What is snail cream?

Snail cream is made by extracting a thick fluid from snails. This thick fluid is released from the snail when it becomes aggravated as a means to protect themselves. The slime helps to protect the snail from rocks, twigs, UV rays, rough surfaces, and any infection. When the slime is produced by the snail, it heals itself at an extremely fast pace. This slimy fluid contains hyaluronic acids, proteoglycans, copper peptides, antimicrobial peptides, and glycoprotein enzymes. The snail extract also contains trace elements of zinc, copper, and iron. The snail extract has regenerative properties, and can help to restore damaged tissues on the skin as well as help replenish moisture in the skin. Snail cream can also help to relieve skin redness and irritated skin.

Why snail cream? What are the benefits of using it?

There are many benefits to using snail cream. Snail cream, or snail slime as it is often referred to, helps the skin produce collagen and elastin. It is thought to increase fibronectin protein production, and help to increase the production of proliferation of fibroblasts. Snail cream can also effectively treat acne, keep the skin clear, reduce pigmentation, treat scarring of the skin, and make wrinkles less noticeable. It can help to brighten the skin, smooth the skin, and help protect the skin from environmental damage.

Snail cream applied to the skin helps promote a natural healing process of the skin. If the skin is damaged due to the sun, snail cream will help to repair the skin so the burn heals faster. Snail cream applied to the skin will help to kill microbes on the skin while emitting antimicrobials. This skin cream will also help develop water holding molecules within the skin. Snail cream can be essential to use when the skin has been traumatized for any reason, as it will help to promote recovery.

Should an individual decide to use snail cream, one must remember that the skin could possibly be allergic to it. It should be applied in small doses, and on a small patch of skin. This will ensure that the individual will be able to see if any allergies are developed with the use of the snail cream. When applying to the skin, the skin should be properly cleansed first to ensure that snail cream can fully be absorbed into the skin.

Snail cream is effective in treating so many different issues an individual may face. Using snail cream will allow the skin to heal faster because the snail cream will make the skin cells regenerate faster.

Topical Retinoids

What are Retinoids?

Topical retinoids are vitamin A creams which have been treating acne and many other skin conditions for many years. They were first introduced to treat acne, but are becoming popular to treat wrinkles, sun damage and skin conditions such as plaque psoriasis. They are available in a cream or a gel, and are usually only applied once a day, usually before going to bed. They are available as a prescribed treatment, or can be found over the counter.

What can Topical Retinoids Treat?

Using topical retinoids for acne can help to unclog the pores. This will allow other medications and treatments used for acne help better by penetrating into the skin further. Dead skin cells will not be permitted to clog the pores, and can also help with the formation of acne scars. Use the topical retinoid after cleansing the face, once the face has fully dried.

Individuals with psoriasis can use topical retinoids. Topical retinoids will help to slow the growth of the lesions on the skin. Typically, retinoids are applied once daily on the lesion before going to bed. They will often be paired up with a steroid.

Topical retinoids can be used to treat wrinkles and other signs of ageing. They will stimulate the production of collagen, and give the skin a rosy glow since the blood vessels are stimulated. Age spots can be faded. Topical retinoids can be applied to the face, arms, neck, chest and hands at least twice a week. Improvement in wrinkles can take 3 months or longer, with results typically seen in 6 to 12 months.

Those with warts can find relief in the use of topical retinoids. They will work on the wart by interrupting the wart’s cell growth. Usually the cream prescribed will work within a few months, and the wart will disappear.

Risks and Side Effects to Topical Retinoids

There are some risk associated with the use of topical retinoids. Skin irritation can be seen when using them. Nearly anyone that used topical retinoids will see some form of this, either with redness of skin, burning, stinging, peeling, swelling and scaling of the skin, and blistering skin. Retinoids will also increase one’s sensitivity to the sun. This is due to the fact that the top layer of skin is being removed when using topical retinoids. This is why it is recommended that the product be applied only at night, and the use of a high quality SPF be used during the day to block out the sun’s harmful rays.

Tips for using Topical Retinoids

Tips to consider using when applying topical retinoids that may be helpful to some include using the product less often and working your way up if it irritates the skin. Some may find it helpful to use it daily, leave it on for an hour and then rinse off in the beginning stages. Topical retinoids may not be safe to use with other topical acne products. You should consult with your skin specialist to discuss if you need to stop or cut back on their usage. Wait half an hour or more after cleansing the face to apply a topical retinoid. The skin should be completely dry. Use only a small bit and spread it out as much as you can. A little bit goes a long way here. Use oil free cosmetics if the face is oily and gentle cleansers to further help the skin.

To minimise dryness of the skin, use a moisturiser with the topical retinoids. Use only the amount recommended and only use it as frequently as prescribed or stated on the packaging directions. Using more frequently will only aid in side effects, and will not help the product work any more effectively.  Avoid being in the sun, and wear an SPF of at least 30.

Warts

What are Warts?

PLEASE NOTE: Advanced Dermatology does not treat warts at this current time. This article is for education and information purposes only.

Warts are growths on the skin that are not cancerous. They appear on the skin when the top layer of skin is infected by a virus. Usually, warts develop when the skin is damaged and the virus is able to enter into the skin. Warts are caused by the HP virus (human papillomavirus), which is contagious. People with weak immune systems tend to get warts more than a healthy individual. Warts can grow on any part of the body.

Type of Warts

There are many different kinds of warts. The common wart, also known as the vurruca vulgaris, grow on the backs of hands, around the nails and on the fingers. They often will have black dots that look similar to seeds, and will feel rough to the touch. They are common where the skin is broken, such as a hangnail. The virus that causes these warts can be spread from the hands to any other part of the body, such as the face, just by touching it.

Flat warts occur anywhere on the body. They are smaller and smoother than any other type of wart. They tend to grow in numbers. It is not uncommon for an individual to have 20 or more at one time.  Males tend to get these in their beard area, while females often get them on their legs. Children tend to have flat warts on their face.

Foot warts are also referred to as plantar warts. These warts grow on the soles of the feet, and grow in a cluster. They too may have black dots, and often hurt. They can be flat or grow inward, due to walking on the feet.

Filiform warts often grow very quickly on the body. They have  a long thread in them that sticks out or fingers that stick out. They will often grow on the face around the eyes, nose and mouth.

Warts Treatment

A dermatologist will be able to tell if you have warts just by examining the skin. However, in some individuals, a skin biopsy could be needed to double check. Warts will often be left untreated, as they will more often then not go away on their own. Warts in children often disappear much faster than those on adults. Should an adult wish to have treatment, there are many options. These include the following:

  • Excision- The dermatologist will cut the wart out of the skin.
  • Cryotherapy- The wart will be frozen off the skin. This is a very common technique to use. It is not as painful as other methods, but can cause dark spots on those with darker skin tones. Repeat treatments may be needed.
  • Cantharidin- The wart is treated with Cantharidin, which will cause it to blister.  After a week or so, you will return to the dermatologist where the wart will be snipped off.
  • Electrosurgery and curettage- Electrosurgery or burning of the wart is used for foot warts, common warts and filiform warts. Curettage or scraping of the wart is often used in conjunction with electrosurgery.
  • Laser treatments- For hard to remove warts, a dermatologist can use lasers to remove the wart. This is often used after another procedure has been tried.

Should you have a wart, never pick at it. Never touch someone else’s wart and always wear sandals in public locker rooms and showers.  Keep the feet dry if you have foot warts as moisture will allow the warts to spread.

PLEASE NOTE: Advanced Dermatology does not treat warts at this current time. This article is for education and information purposes only.

Retinol Cream

What is Retinol?

Retinol cream is a form of vitamin A. It helps to improve skin that is aging by reducing the fine lines and wrinkles that can set in as one ages.Vitamin A has the power to do so much for the skin. It can unclog pores, boosts the collagen so fewer lines and wrinkles are seen, and even speed up the cell turnover so the skin is smoothed and evened out.

The truth about Retinol Creams:

Retinol cream can be used at home on a daily basis to deliver softer, clearer skin. Within 10 to 12 weeks of using a retinol cream, results can usually be seen, however in some cases, it does take longer. Many are leery of using retinol cream from the myths that they have heard. Retinol cream is often said to make the skin sun sensitive. However, it is the ingredient in the cream that is sensitive to the sun. Applying the cream at night is the best way to use retinol cream.

Another huge myth about retinol cream is that one should apply it to dry skin. However, there is no research stating that if you apply it to damp skin, it will lose its effectiveness. Or that it will exacerbate sensitivity.

A third myth that we will discuss about retinol cream is that they exfoliate the skin. Retinol cream will not make the dead skin cells vanish. The retinol cream will however work at smoothing the skin, balancing out pigmentation and enhance collagen production.

How does it work?

When applying retinol cream, one should work gradually up the recommended amount. This could be using only twice a week for the first week and then building up on that until the retinol cream is being used daily.

What are the Retinol side effects?

Retinol creams can produce dry skin, redness and flaking. To prevent dryness, use only a pea sized amount for the entire face. After the retinol cream has sank into the skin for a few minutes, a good moisturiser can be applied to help with the dryness. Other side effects include swelling, peeling, blistering or crusting of the skin. To help minimise all these risks, one should avoid the sun ,wear sunscreen daily, and use only the recommended amount on the skin. Do note that increasing the usage will only up the side effects, and it will have no impact on the effectiveness of the product.

There are some don’ts when thinking of using a retinol cream. Never use retinol creams with anything that contains benzoyl peroxide or alpha hydroxy acids. Not only will this dry out the skin tremendously, but it will also impact the effectiveness of the retinol cream. Do note that if you become pregnant, or are breast feeding, you will need to discontinue use of retinol cream. Using a sunscreen is a must for those that are using retinol cream. And when applying retinol cream, at all costs avoid the eye area, as using retinol cream on this skin will thin it.

What are the benefits of using Retinol creams?

Retinol creams do an excellent job at treating signs of visible ageing. Age spots can be diminished significantly using a retinol cream. Acne can be treated. Retinol cream can undo sun damage done to the skin. It also works as an antioxidant, and prevents free radicals. Retinol creams work well for those with psoriasis. The cream will help to slow the growth of the skin cells. Usually retinol creams work in conjunction with a steroid treatment.

The good news about retinol creams is that most people are able to handle them on the skin. Only a very small percentage of people cannot tolerate them. It is available over the counter, so anyone can have access to it.  There are also prescription retinol creams, for those that have extreme needs.  However, it is best to start with an over the counter cream to see if you skin can handle it.
