Hyperhidrosis is a disorder that that defines individuals who
sweat more than the body would normally need to maintain optimal
temperature. It has been FDA approved for the treatment of
primary axillary hyperhidrosis. While mainly used to treat
excessive sweating of the axillae, it may also be used to treat
the palms and soles among other areas. It is administered just
under the skin using tiny needles. The effects are seen as
quickly as 48 hours, but maximum effect is not seen for 2 weeks.
Studies have shown anywhere between 50% to 90% improvement in
sweating which lasts an average of 6.7 months.
The effect of treatment can be immediate or take up to a week,
with the average duration of effect after a single treatment
being 7 month. Those with neuromuscular disorders such as
multiple sclerosis, or bleeding disorders should not undergo
treatment.
