Hydro Microdermabrasion

What is Hydro Microdermabrasion?

Hydro microdermabrasion is a crystal free method to the microdermabrasion process. It is the latest renovation in skincare technology. Utilising water jets, the outer layer of the skin will be broken up. This will reveal a smoother, more even texture of the skin. It is perfect for those that want to exfoliate the skin but have extremely sensitive skin. This procedure is gentle and very relaxing, with no discomfort felt. Skin will be slightly pink after treatment, but will subside quickly thereafter. Hydro microdermabrasion is used on all skin types, and will help aging skin, skin that is congested, blemished skin, or dull and discolored skin. Oily skin can benefit to make it less greasy, and pores can be shrunk. Mild acne scars can be reduced, and fine lines can be decreased. Puffy eyes have also been treated using hydro microdermabrasion. There will also be an increase in circulation and lymph flow. Skin will see results immediately after the procedure. Skin will be soft and feel hydrated. The process of hydro microdermabrasion takes about half an hour to do. The water that is used can be either distilled, saline or water that has been infused with minerals and vitamins.

Hydro microdermabrasion uses a diamond tipped wand to gently exfoliate the skin. This tip will suction the skin in a gentle manner, which will remove the dead skin cells. Water will be delivered to the skin with the supersonic nozzle that is attached to the microdermabrasion machine. Then the wand will infuse the skin with a serum that was made to fully hydrate the skin.

What are the hydro microdermabrasion benefits?

Why should one pick this type of microdermabrasion? Well, this procedure has longer lasting results than the typical microdermabrasion. Water fully moisturises the new layer of skin that is forming under the dead skin cells. This means that there will be less swelling and redness. This is the perfect treatment to do before a big event, such as a wedding, anniversary party or more!

Not convinced if hydro microdermabrasion is for you? There are many other impressive results as well.  Many do not realise this, but with hydro microdermabrasion, one can remove years of built up skin that is on the face, which will smooth rough skin. And blackheads and whiteheads can be reduced when using the hydro microdermabrasion procedure. As an added benefit, hydro microdermabrasion will allow the skin to better absorb skin care products, which will make them much more effective.

One may opt to get one treatment done, or a series of sessions can be done to create optimal results. A one-time treatment is perfect for those that want to rejuvenate the skin. More treatments will be needed for eliminating fine lines and wrinkles. It is recommended to do 6 to 10 sessions that have been scheduled 7 to 10 days apart. Prices will vary based on where the treatment is being performed on the body, and which clinic is doing the procedure. Hydro microdermabrasion can be done on the face, neck, decollete, and the hands.

Before and after care

After hydro microdermabrasion, you will want to baby the skin with sunscreen to protect it. Use at least an SPF of 30, and try to avoid the sun’s rays if at all possible. Further protect yourself by wearing a wide brimmed hat and sunglasses.

Before having hydro microdermabrasion done, consult your professional skin therapist. Those who have been treated with isotretinoin for severe acne within the past 12 months will not be eligible for this procedure, nor will those with active skin infections, such as herpes or cold sores. Those who have a history of skin not healing properly are also not suitable for this treatment.

Microdermabrasion at Home

What is Microdermabrasion at Home?

Microdermabrasion at home is easy to do with so many wonderful kits and systems that are on the market today. Microdermabrasion at home involves the process of removing dead skin cells off the skin. In a skin clinic a wand will be used to spray crystals onto the face to attack the dead skin cells, which will then be vacuumed up with the wand. Many are astonished to know that there are kits that are available in stores and online that give the same effects of microdermabrasion at a home level. Some of these kits and systems even come with little wands to use, while others will simply only require the use of the hands to rub the product into the face. The products usually contain scrubs that are abrasive on the skin.  Below is a list of some wonderful microdermabrasion at home kits to try out.

List of Microdermabrasion at Home Kits:

  • Olay Regenerist Microdermabrasion & Peel System– This product will wake up tired skin and give a fresher complexion. Fine lines and wrinkles are diminished, and tone will be more even. Super gentle to the face that it can be used up to two times weekly.

  • Kiehl’s Epidermal Retexturizing Microdermabrasion– A microdermabrasion system that was developed with no fragrance or added vitamins. It works well to leave the skin looking new.

On the market, there are also machines that can aid and assist with microdermabrasion at home. While these are more costly than the options listed above, they really do work well with the skin. Here are some wonderful options if you have the extra cash to spend:

  • PMD Personal Microderm Device with accessories– This hand held device uses aluminum oxide crystals and will vacuum up the dead skin cells. Device can be used every 6 to 7 days.

Benefits of Microdermabrasion

The Benefits of Microdermabrasion

Microdermabrasion is a technique used by many to deliver excellent results to the skin. It is a simple, painless procedure that often requires 6 to 10 treatments to give the skin the best results.  It can be done in half an hour or less and is often called the “lunch hour peel”. With microdermabrasion, there is no unwanted downtime. Microdermabrasion uses a powerful tool that will get rid of unwanted dead skin cells to reveal fresher looking skin. It has been around since the 1980’s. There are different types of microdermabrasion. Crystal microdermabrasion uses crystals that are blasted out of a hand held device to polish away dead skin cells. The crystals will attack the dead skin cells, and grab hold of them, then be vacuumed off the skin. It can be somewhat uncomfortable, but will never be painful. The most sensitive areas are usually around the mouth and the nose. Diamond-tip microdermabrasion will use a hand held tool without the use of any crystals. The diamond-tip will exfoliate the skin, capturing the dead skin cells and vacuuming them off the skin.

So you may ask yourself, why do so many people opt to have microdermabrasion done? Well for starters, there are some great benefits of microdermabrasion, firstly dead skin cells are taken off the face, which will reveal softer, smoother skin. The skin will have a polished look to it, and will essentially glow. Microdermabrasion treatment will also clean out the pores.  Pores often become trapped with dirt, debris, oil, and dead skin cells. The treatment cleans deep down into the skin to remove the unwanted dirt, debris, oil and dead skin cells, which clog the pores. When pores are clogged, they are enlarged. Pulling out the unwanted gunk will allow the pores to shrink in size, which will also help to have a more radiant face.

More benefits of Microdermabrasion you may not know about

Another important benefits of microdermabrasion that it works great for fine lines and wrinkles. The top layer of the epidermis, which removes the skin around the lines and wrinkles. This will make lines and wrinkles much less noticeable. While this is happening, collagen production is stimulated, which will help speed up skin cell renewal process and help the dermis create a new layer of skin that looks fresher and renewed.

Scars can also be decreased using microdermabrasion. The surface layers of the skin will be removed by the hand held device that is abrading the skin. This will take time, but over a course of treatments, the skin can see a reduction in scarring.

Microdermabrasion is often used for stretch marks as well. Many sessions will be needed to see an effect since the stretch marks are in the under layer of the skin. Microdermabrasion will not reach this layer of the skin but it will help to lessen the stretch marks by bringing the skin closer to the stretch mark level, which will make them less visible to the eye.

Other benefits of microdermabrasion that people have seen include smoothing out skin that is rough or coarsely textured, helping with sun damaged skin, reducing hyper pigmentation or age spots,  a youthful appearance, a reduction in oily skin, and acne. Microdermabrasion can also help bring new life to dull skin, and help with keratosis pilaris.

Microdermabrasion is a technique that is used by many skin therapists to give those with skin issues radiant skin that will glow. Skin will look younger, refreshed and rejuvenated, and will give much confidence to those that opt to have it done. Results can often be seen in the first treatment, but full results can take a course of treatments administered. It is a procedure that should be included in everyones skin regiment as the benefits of microdermabrasion are great.

Trichloroacetic Acid Peel

What is Trichloroacetic Acid Peel?

A trichloroacetic acid peel is a chemical peel that can be done on the face, hands, the back of the hands, the legs, the chest, and the neck. It is a medium depth peel that can be done in either the dermatologist office or in the comfort of your own home with over the counter peels. These peels were designed to repair and rejuvenate the skin. They are formulated with a concentration of 8% to 30% in strength. Tricholoroacetic peels are often referred to as TCA peels and can be done on the entire face or just done by spot peeling. Often time’s more than one peel is needed to see huge results on the skin. Generally, a trichloroacetic acid peel lasts about 6 months, but if they are supplemented with lactic acid peels or glycolic acid every two weeks, they will last longer. It is recommended that if you have a trichloroacetic acid peel done for the first time, to have it done professionally. Any trichloroacetic acid over 20% should be done by a professional.

Best Uses:

Trichloroacetic acid peels are done to reduce age spots as well as brown spots. They can improve melasma, and treat different types of acne.  They will reduce the fine look of wrinkles, improve leathery textures on the skin, give a glow to the face, and help treat sun damaged skin.

Preperation for the Trichloroacetic Acid Peel

Before having a tricholoracetic acid peel done, there are a few steps that should be taken. Many dermatologists will recommend using AHA serum or a retinoid cream for 2 weeks prior to the treatment. This will ensure that the peeling is more even and will penetrate even better. Three days before the peel is done all exfoliants must be stopped. Hair removers and scrubs that are grainy should also be avoided. Two days before the peel is done, a patch test should be done. The patch test must be done wherever the peel is to be done.

Before a trichloroacetic peel is done, the skin must be thoroughly cleansed. The skin will be washed several times and an astringent will be applied to wipe all traces of oil off the face. The peel will then be applied and allowed to set on the skin for a determined amount of time. A second or third layer may be added. A fan will be running to help cool the skin down, as it will feel like a burning, hot, tingling sensation. After the solution is washed off the face, a thick layer of antibacterial cream will be applied to help speed healing and protect the skin.

Trichloroacetic Acid Peel Recovery

Since the trichloroacetic acid peel is done as a medium depth on the skin, there will be healing time needed. Usually a week is needed as there will be peeling skin. The skin will also see some redness, which can last from 2 to 8 weeks or longer. After the peel minor pain can be felt in some individuals after the chemical peel is done. Mild swelling will most likely take place after the peel and should be resolved in two to three days. The skin will be very sensitive to the sun for 6-8 weeks after a trichloroacetic peel. Sunglasses, sunscreen and a hat should be worn at all times.

Things to do for after a trichloroacetic acid peel are to wash the skin nightly with a gentle cleanser. After washing the skin and patting dry, moisturise the skin like crazy. Moisturise the skin several times daily as this will help with the flaking and peeling. Avoid exposure to the sun, and always wear a sunscreen.

Freckle Removal

What are Freckles?

Freckles are small patches of colour on the skin that can be brown, tan, red, black, or even yellow. They often become more pronounced with exposure to sun, and in some cases could be genetic. They can occur anywhere on the body, but are most commonly seen on the face and arms. They are not a health threat to anyone, and are very common. They are seen more in the summer than in the winter, and often are seen on those with light complexions, blonde hair and red hair, but can be ultimately seen on anyone.

Freckle Removal Treatment

Many are not happy with how freckles will make them look. They may become self conscious if they have large patches of them covering the skin. There are ways to remove freckles from the skin. One such method is Laser/IPL, which is the single most effective way to remove freckles. IPL stands for intense pulse light. This treatment is suitable for those that are wanting to remove freckles or reduce excessive freckling of the skin, want an even skin tone or would like to target a specific age spot. This is a quick procedure that is very easy for a skin specialist to perform. Often times it will take between 30 to 90 minutes to perform, based on where the treatment is being done at. Many times a single freckle removal treatment will be needed to remove the freckles, however, it is not uncommon to have a few more sessions after the initial one for the best possible results. If multiple freckle removal treatments are used, three to six weeks will be needed between each treatment. The intense pulse light will target the areas on the skin that have excess pigment, breaking down the excess melanin. Eye pads or glasses will be used to protect the eyes, and a cooling gel can be placed on the skin. Short bursts of light that has been filtered will be absorbed by the high concentration of melanin that is found in the freckles. The melanin will then be heated by this process, which in turn will eradicate the melanin rich cells. After the freckle removal treatment, the cooling gel will be wiped off, and a moisturiser with sunscreen will be applied. Anywhere between a few days and up until 2 weeks after treatment, the freckles will darken, but then will fade away as the excessive melanin is shed. This treatment is not recommended for persons with very dark or tanned skin complexions, nor for those that are pregnant.

How does IPL work for Freckle Removal

Upon receiving IPL, there will be a light tingling sensation that feels warm. It can be an uncomfortable process, with the skin being red after the procedure is finished. Some skin specialists will use topical anesthetics. However, not everyone that has this treatment done finds pain associated with it There could be mild swelling after the treatment, which should subside within a few hours to a few days.  Small blisters could form, but this is very rare.

Benefits to using IPL for Freckle Removal

There are many benefits to having IPL done on the skin. First off, it is non-invasive. This means there will be no surgery involved, and patients can often return to their normal daily activities as soon as the procedure is done. Secondly, it is quick on the skin. Often times, after one treatment, skin tone will be noticeable more even.

Freckle Removal Cost

A single full face treatment will run between $400 to $600, while a neck, face and chest treatment is between $900 to $2000. This will all depend on who is doing the freckle removal treatment, it also depends on the area of treatment. Only allow a certified skin specialist or doctor to perform the freckle removal treatment on your skin. They should have experience with laser treatments, and be willing to answer any question that you may have about the procedure. To speak to one of our skin specialist about the freckle removal treatment you can call us on 1300 or request a call back.

Dermatitis Herpetiformis

What is Dermatitis Herpetiformis?

Dermatitis Herpetiformis is a rash that is extremely itchy.  It contains both bumps and blisters. It is chronic, so one can plan on having it for a good measure of time. It is usually seen in people who are 20 years of age or older, although children do get it from time to time.  It is common in both men and woman.  There is not a known cause to dermatitis herpetiformis.  It is linked to gluten disease, which is referred to as celiac sprue disease. Fifteen to twenty-five percent of those that have celiac sprue disease have dermatitis herpetiformis (DH).   The rash is  believed to be caused  when gluten from the foods and drinks in one’s diet are mixed with IgA, which then enters the bloodstream.  It will circulate in the body, causing small blood vessels in the skin to clog.  The white blood cells will then release complements, which are powerful chemicals, which create the rash.  However, iodine is needed for the rash to form, so if one is diagnosed with DH, it is best to avoid iodine in the diet.  Despite the name, the herpes virus does not cause this disease.

Dermatitis Herpetiformis Symptoms

Symptoms of dermatitis herpetiformis include a rash that looks like eczema, extremely itchy bumps and blisters that are usually seen on the back, buttocks, knees and elbow, scratch marks instead of blisters, or a rash that is the same size and shape on both sides. Usually before the skin breaks out into a rash, the skin that will develop the rash will begin to burn or itch. Bumps that look like pimples will appear,  with a clear liquid in the center.  After a few days, the bumps will heal, however, they will leave a purple mark that does last for a few weeks or more. As the old bumps go away, new ones will form.  The disease may go into remission, but can return at any time.   It is a lifelong disease, but remission does happen in 10 to 20 percent of patients.  DH can cause negative health effects, such as anemia, vitamin deficiencies, and gastrointestinal cancer.  This kind of cancer can develop quite easily as there is constant inflammation of the intestines.

If your doctor suspects that you have dermatitis herpetiformis, a skin biopsy will most likely be done.  A biopsy of the intestines may also be performed, as well as blood tests. The blood tests will look for antibodies that are present in the blood.

Dermatitis Herpetiformis Treatment

Often times when dermatitis herpetiformis is diagnosed, an antibiotic will be prescribed. Dapsone is a common one that is used. However, there are some serious side effects for this strong medication. To have full effect on DH, the dose will have to be slowly raised over a course of several months.  Weekly or bi-weekly blood testing may be needed if one is prescribed Dapsone.    The side effects include damage to the liver, muscle weakness, sensitivity to sunlight, anemia, and peripheral neuropathy. If your doctor does not feel the need to prescribe to you Dapsone, he or she may give one sulfapyridine, tetracycline, or another immunosuppressive drugs.  Do note that these are not as effective as Dapsone.

A huge treatment is going gluten free in the diet.  No food or drinks that you consume will be able to contain rye, oats, barley, or  wheat products. Getting rid of the gluten could lead to much less medication that one needs to take. Going gluten free will enhance bone density and nutrition, reduce the risk of intestinal lymphoma, and improve gluten enteropathy.   It could also reduce the risk of developing other autoimmune conditions.

Fibroma

Fibroma Treatment

All fibrous growths on the skin’s surface, whether flat or raised, are caused by a skin irregularity often associated with the keratinisation process and are called fibromas. These fibrous imperfections become more common with age and are viewed by many people to be unsightly.

Many of the simple fibromas are different in colour and texture from normal skin. They may become shiny, glassy in appearance and lose colour, appearing as white raised patches, which can be felt as hard, movable lumps or papules in the skin’s surface layers. The skin may become hyper pigmented, assuming a dark red-brown or a dusky wine colour.

Note that this article is provided for information purposes only. We do not provide treatment for Fibroma and recommend consulting with your dermatologist to find out more about your treatment options.

Cutis Laxa

Cutis Laxa: Causes, Symptoms and Treatments

Cutis Laxa is disorder of the connective tissues that is rare. It is also known as Chalazoderma, Dermatomegaly, Generalised Elastolysis and Pachydermatocele. Cutis Laxa means loose skin in Latin.  The skin is sagging and not stretchy. It will often hang in lose folds, which could leave the appearance of a droopy face or other parts of the body. On the neck, in the armpits and the groin, there may be extremely wrinkled skin. It effects 1 in 2,000,000 babies, or approximately 400 families worldwide.  Most of the cases seen are inherited. Prognosis will depend on each individual case. Some effects are extremely mild, which only effect the individual’s looks, while others are fatal, effecting the internal organs. The complications of the disease is what makes it fatal, such as a ruptured aortic aneurysm. It is quite possible to live a full, normal life with Cutis Laxa.

Type of Cutis Laxa

There are many different kinds of Cutis Laxa. Those include Autosomal Dominant Cutis Laxa (ADCL).  Under this disorder, symptoms can begin at any time between birth and young adulthood. For the disease to be present in an individual, only one copy of the defective gene is needed. The child has a 50% chance of inheriting the gene from either one of the parents. Under this form of Cutis Laxa, the skin can change at any age, while the only feature of the disorder could be the hanging skin. While it is uncommon for systemic involvement, facial involvement is universal. A normal life expectancy is expected.

X-linked Cutis Laxa is also a form of the disorder. Clinical features of this include loose skin, loose joints or joint hyper extensibility, mild mental retardation, and bone abnormalities, such as a crooked nose, pigeon breast, and funnel breast. There are frequent loose stools and urinary tract blockages. The defective gene will be located on the X chromosome.

The third kind of Cutis Laxa is known as autosomal recessive. In order for the disorder to be present, two copies of the defective gene need to be inherited from the parents. Symptoms and signs usually begin when the child is an infant. Loose skin, hernias, and emphysema are common. There are bone abnormalities, such as hip disclosure or spinal curvature, and diverticula in the bladder, esophagus, or duodenum can be seen. Aortic aneurysm can also be seen. Under autosomal recessive, there are two types, type I and type II. Type I is the severe form, which is present at birth and the individual will have emphysema early in life. Under type II, there is growth retardation, with the disorder being present at birth most of the time. There is a bilateral congenital dislocation of the hips, as well as severe loose skin over the hands, feet and abdomen.

What to do if you Suspect you Have Cutis Laxa

If Cutis Laxa is suspected in an individual, the skin will be examined by a doctor. Loose, hanging skin will be looked for, as well as skin folds around the eyes, face, neck, shoulders and thighs. A skin biopsy can be done. Other testing can involve chest X-rays, blood tests, an echo cardiogram, and a pulmonary function test.

Cutis Laxa Treatments

Treatments for Cutis Laxa are often personalised with each individual. Individuals may see a cardiologist, dermatologist, internist, pulmonologist, and geneticists for treatment. Surgery may be used to tighten the skin, and medication could be prescribed. Many times those with Cutis Laxa are prescribed dapsone.

There is no way currently to prevent Cutis Laxa. Genetic counseling can be sought if anyone has a family history of Cutis Laxa. Since there is no known direct cause, no preventative measures can be taken.

How To Get Rid Of Acne Scars

How To Get Rid Of Acne Scars

Many often wonder how to get rid of acne scars. Acne scars are a result of clogged pores that have become inflamed. The pore will then swell, which causes a break in the follicle wall. If the break is deep enough, it will cause a scar many times when the skin attempts to repair itself.

There are two types of acne scars, atrophic scars and hypertrophic scars. Atrophic scars are also referred to as depressed scars and develop when there is a loss of tissue. There are two kinds of atrophic scars- icebox scars, which are small in size but leave noticeable holes in the skin, and boxcar scars, which are oval or round in shape, with steep angled sides. Hypertrophic scars, or keloid scars, are caused when the body produces too much collagen, resulting in a raised mass of tissue on the skin’s surface.

Why should an individual want to treat acne scars?

  • Ask to see work the dermatologist has done. Ask if the dermatologist has a portfolio of before and after procedures they are willing to share with the patient. This will give the individual an idea of what work the dermatologist is capable of doing. If a dermatologist does not want to share this information, then finding a different one to perform the procedure is a good idea.
  • Ask what results they expect to see with the treatment that is selected for the individual. Ask if there could be any complications, what the benefits will be, and how long recovery is expected for the treatment. Also find out if the procedure is cleared by the FDA.
  • Ask how many times they have performed the procedure that was chosen. Ask who, if anyone, will be helping them with the procedure, and what training they have had.
  • Ask if the dermatologist is a board certified dermatologist. Ask what the credentials are for each person that will be helping with any procedure taking place.
